Microsoft is moving applications that access Exchange Online away from Exchange Web Services (EWS) and toward Microsoft Graph. Edison Mail is updating its Microsoft 365 connection to support this change. You can confirm this information by visiting the following Microsoft article website:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/graph/migrate-exchange-web-services-overview
If your work or school account previously connected through Exchange, you may now need to sign in again using the Office 365 option. Your organization may also need to approve the permissions required by the updated connection.
What is changing?
EWS and Microsoft Graph are different ways for an email app to communicate with Microsoft’s mail service. Moving between them changes how the app accesses your mailbox and obtains authorization.
This does not create a new email address or move your messages to a different mailbox. However, an existing Exchange connection or previous approval may not cover the updated connection. Both EWS and Microsoft Graph can use modern authentication.
Which account option should I choose?
- Microsoft 365 work or school accounts hosted in Exchange Online: select Office 365.
- Personal Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, and MSN accounts: select Outlook/Hotmail.
- Exchange accounts hosted on your organization’s own servers: confirm the correct setup with your IT administrator.
A custom email domain does not identify the hosting service. If you are unsure whether your mailbox uses Microsoft 365, ask your IT administrator or email provider.
How can this affect my account?
During reconnection or the transition to the updated connection, you may encounter:
- A disconnected-account banner or a request to sign in again.
- A Microsoft screen saying “Need admin approval.”
- Messages or folders that do not load after sign-in.
- Sending, synchronization, or notification problems.
These symptoms can have several causes. An administrator-approval screen identifies an authorization requirement, but it does not explain every synchronization problem.
Before reconnecting
Install the latest Edison Mail version available in the App Store or Google Play Store.
If your existing Microsoft 365 account needs to be added again, remove its connection from Edison Mail and add it through Office 365. Removing the account from Edison Mail does not delete messages stored in your Microsoft mailbox. Save any unsent drafts you need before removing the connection.
Sign in with your work or school email address and complete Microsoft’s verification steps.
Why am I being asked for approval now?
Microsoft checks the permissions requested by the application against your organization’s policies. Approval may be required because of those policies, the permissions requested by the updated integration, or both.
An account that worked previously can therefore require new approval. This does not mean you personally need to become an administrator.
If you are a Microsoft 365 administrator
On the “Need admin approval” screen:
1. Select “Have an admin account? Sign in with that account.”
2. Sign in with an administrator account authorized to review and grant the requested permissions.
3. Review the request and decide whether to approve it under your organization’s policies.
4. After approval, return to Edison Mail and connect the mailbox you intend to use with that mailbox’s own credentials.
Not every administrator role can approve every permission. If approval is unavailable, your organization may need an administrator with additional consent privileges.
If you are not a Microsoft 365 administrator
On the “Need admin approval” screen:
1. Select “Return to the application without granting consent.”
2. Back in Edison Mail, select “Get Approval Link.”
3. Share the link with your organization’s IT administrator.
4. Ask them to review the request using an authorized Microsoft 365 administrator account.
5. Once they confirm approval, return to Edison Mail and sign in again through Office 365.
You do not need to share your password or verification codes with your administrator or Edison Mail support.
If Microsoft asks for a justification instead
Enter a brief explanation, such as:
“I need to access my work or school email through Edison Mail on my phone.”
Select “Request approval” or “Submit,” then contact your IT department to ask them to review the pending request. Submitting a request does not mean approval has already been granted.
What permissions does Edison Mail use?
Edison Mail’s Microsoft 365 integration uses both delegated and application permissions. Delegated permissions support access on behalf of the signed-in user. Application permissions support background services used for features such as notifications and bulk email actions.
Your administrator should review the actual permissions shown in Microsoft before deciding whether to approve access. Administrator approval is an authorization decision for your organization.
What if approval is declined or no administrator is available?
Edison Mail cannot grant consent on your organization’s behalf or bypass its access policies. Contact the organization, school, or Microsoft 365 service provider responsible for the mailbox to identify an authorized administrator.
What if the account still does not work after approval?
Please contact Edison Mail support and include:
- The affected email address.
- Your device model, operating system version, and Edison Mail version.
- Confirmation that you used the Office 365 option.
- Whether your administrator confirmed approval.
- What happens afterward: sign-in fails, the Inbox stays empty, messages do not send, or notifications are missing.
- Whether the same mailbox works in Outlook on the web.
If “Get Approval Link” is unavailable or an error appears, include a screenshot with passwords, verification codes, and private information hidden.
If you have already removed and re-added the account, tell us the result rather than repeating the same troubleshooting.
